Can You Play PS2 Games on PS4?

Can you play PS2 games on PS4? Yes — around sixty-five of them, all as downloads. The PS4 can't read PS2 discs in any form, but between 2015 and the PS5's arrival Sony ran the "PS2 on PS4" program: officially emulated classics sold on the PlayStation Store, each one up-rendered to 1080p with full trophy support. Here's what the program offered, which games made the cut, and how the whole thing carried forward to PS5.
The Short Answer
| Method | Does it work on PS4? |
|---|---|
| PS2 discs (original DVDs/CDs) | No — the PS4 drive never supported them |
| "PS2 on PS4" Classics (PS Store) | Yes — ~65 downloadable emulated titles |
| Same Classics on PS5 | Yes — every PS4 PS2 Classic plays on PS5 via backwards compatibility |
| PS Plus Premium streaming/download | Yes — the Classics Catalogue includes the PS2 line on PS4 too |
| PS1 games | No on PS4 (PS1 classics were a PS3/PSP thing) — but on PS5 some are downloadable |
| Free upgrades for discs you own | No — Sony has no disc-to-digital scheme |
The "PS2 on PS4" Program
Sony announced PS2 emulation for PS4 in December 2015 and launched it overnight with eight games: Dark Cloud, Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City and San Andreas, Rogue Galaxy, The Mark of Kri, Twisted Metal: Black and War of the Monsters, at $9.99–$14.99 each. Unlike the earlier PS3 "PS2 Classics" — plain emulations with no extras — the PS4 versions were treated as real ports:
- 1080p up-rendering — quadruple the PS2's internal resolution, then scaled cleanly for modern TVs
- Full trophy lists — every title shipped with trophies developed alongside the original creators, most with Platinums
- PS4 system features — Remote Play to Vita, Share Play, live broadcasting, activity feeds, even second-screen manuals via the PlayStation App
The catalogue grew steadily through 2016–2017 to roughly sixty-five titles, then stalled as attention shifted to PS5 — where the same emulator was upgraded further in 2024 with rewind, save states and display filters.
Which PS2 Games Are on PS4?
The program leaned heavily on Sony first-party and Rockstar titles. The standouts still buyable include:
- Rockstar's PS2 era — Bully, Manhunt, Max Payne, Red Dead Revolver, The Warriors (the GTA trilogy was removed in 2021 when the Definitive Edition launched)
- Jak and Daxter — The Precursor Legacy, Jak II, Jak 3 and Jak X
- Cult Sony catalogue — Dark Cloud 1 & 2, Rogue Galaxy, PaRappa 2, Ape Escape 2, Wild Arms 3, Siren, Okage: Shadow King, Primal, The Mark of Kri
- Fighting and arcade — King of Fighters 2000, Fatal Fury: Battle Archives 2, Metal Slug Anthology, Samurai Shodown VI
- Licensed survivors — Resident Evil Code: Veronica X, Destroy All Humans 1 & 2, Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings, the early Star Wars titles
- Left field — Psychonauts, Harvest Moon: Save the Homeland and A Wonderful Life, Indigo Prophecy/Fahrenheit, Eternal Ring
As with every PS2 re-release program, the gaps matter more than the list: no Metal Gear Solid 2 or 3, no Kingdom Hearts, no Gran Turismo 3 or 4, no Silent Hill, and no God of War pair. Licensing — especially expired music and publisher rights — is why roughly 1.5% of the ~4,000-game PS2 library made it over.
What It Costs
PS2 Classics on PS4 sell standalone for roughly £3.99–£15.99 each and yours to keep — no subscription needed. They're also all folded into PlayStation Plus Premium (~£119.99/year in the UK), which includes the PS2, PS1 and PSP classics on both PS4 and PS5. One genuinely nice detail: every PS4-era PS2 Classic is automatically playable on PS5, so a purchase isn't stranded on the old console.
Using Your Actual PS2 Discs — And Better Alternatives
There is no disc route on PS4, full stop — no model variant, hidden setting or adaptor changes that. If the goal is playing your own collection rather than Sony's sixty-five:
- A real PS2 — the cheap and complete answer, and it even runs the entire PS1 library natively; our Slim guide covers which model to buy and the specs guide explains what each revision changed
- A backwards-compatible fat PS3 — launch 60GB models play almost the whole PS2 library from disc; the model-by-model breakdown is in our PS2-on-PS3 guide
- PCSX2 on PC — free emulation with far more upscaling and modding headroom than Sony's wrapper; see the emulator guide
- A modded PS2 with OPL — play your own discs as ISOs from HDD or network; formats covered in the PS2 ISO guide
The Verdict
Yes, you can play PS2 games on PS4 — a curated set of around sixty-five downloadable Classics with trophies and 1080p up-rendering, every one of which also runs on PS5. But there's no disc support and no way to play the other 98% of the library. For a nostalgia hit of Bully or Dark Cloud it's the easiest route that ever existed; for the real archive, the original hardware — or PCSX2 — still wins, and our cheats archive and games index cover the whole catalogue either way.
