Can You Play PS2 Games on PS3? Model Compatibility Explained

Can you play PS2 games on PS3? Yes — but only if you have the right PS3. Sony built real PS2 hardware into the earliest PlayStation 3s, then quietly stripped it out revision by revision until it was gone entirely. Every PS3 still plays PS1 discs and downloadable PS2 Classics, but only four model families will spin an actual PS2 disc. Here's exactly which ones, how to check yours, and what the alternatives are — including on PS5 and the original hardware.
The Short Answer, Model by Model
| PS3 model | PS2 discs? | How |
|---|---|---|
| CECHAxx — 60GB NTSC (US/Japan launch) | Yes | Full hardware — real Emotion Engine + Graphics Synthesizer inside |
| CECHBxx — 20GB NTSC (US/Japan launch) | Yes | Full hardware, same chips |
| CECHCxx — 60GB PAL (UK/EU/Aus launch) | Yes, partial | Graphics Synthesizer hardware + EE emulated by the Cell processor |
| CECHExx — 80GB NTSC/Korea | Yes, partial | Same hybrid as CECHC |
| CECHGxx onwards — 40GB, later 80GB, 160GB fats | No | PS2 hardware removed entirely |
| All PS3 Slims (CECH-20xx–30xx) | No | — |
| All Super Slims (CECH-40xx) | No | — |
| Every PS3 | Downloads only | PS2 Classics from the PS Store work on all models |
One universal caveat: backwards-compatible PS3s are region-locked for PS2 games — a UK PAL PS3 only plays PAL PS2 discs, even though PS3 games themselves are region-free.
Which PS3s Actually Play PS2 Discs?
There are two tiers of compatibility, and both live inside the original "fat" chassis:
Full Hardware Backwards Compatibility — Cecha and Cechb
The Japan and North America launch models (November 2006) contain an actual PS2 motherboard's worth of silicon: a real Emotion Engine CPU, a real Graphics Synthesizer GPU and the RDRAM to go with them — the same chips documented in our PS2 specs guide. Compatibility is the best of any non-PS2 console ever made: the overwhelming majority of the ~4,000-game library just works, looking and sounding as it should. The catch for UK readers: these are NTSC machines, so a CECHA01 plays US PS2 games, not your PAL collection.
Partial Compatibility — Cechc and Ceche
The 60GB PAL launch model (March 2007 — the one most UK players got) and the 80GB NTSC model kept the Graphics Synthesizer chip but dropped the Emotion Engine, emulating it on the Cell CPU instead. The result is still genuine backwards compatibility — most games run fine — but a small percentage glitch or refuse to boot, and a handful run with quirks the full-hardware models don't have. If you're in Britain, CECHC03 is the model to hunt: the only UK console that ever played PS2 discs.
How to Check Your PS3 in Thirty Seconds
You can identify a backwards-compatible fat PS3 without even opening the lid:
- Four USB ports on the front — compatible models have four; non-compatible fats have two
- Chrome trim around the edges and a glossy finish (the 20GB CECHB lacks the trim but keeps the four ports)
- Flash card readers — SD/CompactFlash/Memory Stick slots behind a flap on the front left
- "PLAYSTATION 3" in the Spider-Man font across the top of the case, rather than the later "PS3" logo
- SACD support — only the PS2-compatible models play Super Audio CDs
- The sticker on the back — read the model number outright: CECHA, CECHB, CECHC or CECHE play PS2 discs; CECHG and every later letter do not
How Well Does It Work?
Better than most people expect. Compatible models upscale PS2 games to your chosen HD resolution and offer an optional smoothing filter that softens the jaggies — it's not a remaster, but it's a real upgrade over composite into an LCD. Saves go to virtual memory cards on the PS3's hard drive, and Sony even sold a memory card adaptor to copy across real PS1/PS2 saves. Compatibility rates on the full-hardware models sit in the high nineties percent; the CECHC/CECHE hybrid loses a few more games to emulation bugs but remains solid for the big names — God of War, Shadow of the Colossus, Gran Turismo 4 all run.
Every PS3 Still Plays PS2 Classics
Here's the part most guides bury: any PS3 — Slim included — plays PS2 games bought from the PlayStation Store. Sony's "PS2 Classics" line ran the same software-emulation route as the fat consoles' partial mode, packaged as downloads. GTA: San Andreas, Bully, Manhunt, Max Payne, Red Dead Revolver and dozens more were released this way, and the PS3 store remained online after Sony reversed its 2021 closure plans. Availability changes and you need a working PSN account, but a £20 Super Slim plus a few Classics downloads is a legitimate way into the library. The PS4 later ran its own, better-featured classics line — our PS2-on-PS4 guide covers how that compares. And the BC generosity runs both ways: every PS3 also plays PS1 discs natively, just as nearly every PS2 does.
PS3 vs PS5 for PS2 Games
If you're choosing between modern consoles, the comparison is stark. The PS5 can only play around fifty curated PS2 Classics — no discs, no exceptions — while a backwards-compatible PS3 plays nearly the entire library from your own discs. The PS5 versions are slicker (trophies, rewind, save states, higher rendering resolutions) but the catalogue is 1% the size. For library coverage, a fat PS3 wins; for convenience and presentation, the PS5 Classics are easier on a modern TV.
The Honest Caveats
- BC models are collectors' items now — working CECHA/CECHC units routinely sell for £100–£250+, and prices climb yearly
- They carry the YLOD risk — the launch fats' 90nm chips and ~380W power supplies are the most failure-prone PS3s ever made; buy refurbished or accept the risk
- Partial models aren't flawless — CECHC/CECHE emulation still trips on a minority of games
- Region lock applies — PAL console, PAL games, no exceptions without modding
The Verdict
Can you play PS2 games on a PS3? Absolutely — if it's a launch fat. A CECHA/CECHB gives you nearly the whole library on real hardware inside the console; the UK's CECHC03 does it with a small compatibility tax; every other PS3 is limited to PS2 Classics downloads. If you'd rather skip the hunt, an actual PS2 remains the cheapest route — see our Slim buying guide — while PCSX2 on PC offers the best picture quality of any option, and our ISO guide covers playing your own discs digitally. However you get there, the cheats archive and games index have you covered once you're playing.
