To be right up front, I wasn't a fan of the previous Ubisoft developed Naruto game, Rise of a Ninja. It had some impressively ambitious ideas for an anime based title, but the execution fell flat on practically every front, with awkward, stunted controls, a limited, extremely poorly put together retread of the first half of the original Naruto's storyline that excised massive amounts of story and plot and many characters in a manner that rendered a lot of the story nonsensical. This was then topped off by one of the worst combat systems I've come across in a beat em up. The end result obviously was a game that could only be described as 'not good'(To put it kindly).
Broken Bond DOES attempt to address many of the faults with Rise of a Ninja, but does so in an extremely half hearted manner and also introduces some new annoyances to the mix.
Covering the second half of the Naruto story, the game plays more or less identically to Rise of a Ninja(Sadly with the same unresponsive, unfriendly controls), but provides a larger play area for the game and a slightly longer story mode(Took me just under 9 hours to finish) to explore, with the best move made being to allow you to see and play the parts of the story that don't centre around Naruto himself.
Playing as numerous characters as the story goes along, the game does manage to cover a lot of ground with the story, but again it excises a lot of plot and changes even more of it completely(often to remove certain key characters from the plot entirely or completely simplify some major character's back stories). While this may not be a huge issue if you don't already know the plot(If you're not a Naruto fan already though, you're not likely to be playing this), it is very distracting if you're a fan and you're wondering where the hell the likes of Shizune, Iruka, Hinata, Asuma, and others are and why on Earth Gaara, Temari and Kankuro have their entire role in this part of the series cut down to a cameo where they don't even fully appear on camera. This sort of story butchering may have been passable if you were playing a straight beat em up title like the recent Ultimate Ninja Storm, but when it occurs in what is billed as an involved, extensive adventure title, it is a lot harder to overlook.
Gameplay wise, I have mentioned the unfriendly controls. During the platforming sequences, the characters feel sluggish to move, the jumping doesn't respond quickly enough, and the use of the characters' powers is a repetitive sequence of timed button presses at pre set locations throughout the game, with no scope at all given for free use of abilities(Beyond wall running perhaps) to explore the world. It all feels far too scripted to be a truly fun platformer.
The fighting, again, is awful, with slow moving one on one battles(With the ability to switch characters mid fight added) amounting to little more than button bashing and special moves which again trigger the dreaded timed button press mini games that this game really uses way too much. The combat is too slow and sluggish and doesn't replicate character powers well enough to make each character fell 'unique' enough. Online combat suffers not only for these issues, but also for the massive amounts of lag the game has, making the multiplayer often unplayable whenever I tried it.
Visually the game is good though, with colourful characters and areas with a lot of impressive detail in their design. It looks great, despite some frame rate issues and poor facial animation and lip synching with the voices.
Speaking of voices, while the game does give the option of either having the english or japanese voice actors, the japanese voice setting is riddled with bugs, with the character voices seeming to switch constantly between english and japanese during combat.
I don't want to keep crapping all over this game, as it does try to do a lot of interesting things and it is the most varied and extensive Naruto game to date. However this doesn't count for much when everything it does it doesn't do very well.
Fans may get something out of it, but overall, there was simply too much wrong with this game to make it a recommendable title for me.
Must try harder ubisoft.
Naruto broken bonds vs Naruto ulimate Ninja storm! October 9, 2008 3 out of 12 found this review helpful

it looks like i'm the first to review this game i'll tell you the info about what i know about the game
Naruto 2 Broken Bonds is the sequel of Naruto raise of a Ninja it starts with the journey mode its alot darker then the first game that takes after the final chuinn exams with Sasuke fighting Garra and the hidden leaf village is attack by Orochimaru along with the sound Ninja and sand Ninja and the hidden leaf village has taken a right good beating everything has been destroyed its takes place between episodes 80 to 135 of the anime.
the heros of the game are our hyper active kunckle head Naruto lazy Shikamaru (what a Drag) and Neji are alot stronger Naruto with his nine tail fox power. unlike the first game you are now play as a squad rather than a single character and you can switch characters and they fellow you your able to switch the characters anytime in the game you have three characters in the team. i watched one video clip i it was Naruto Shikamaru and Neji are on a mission is to stop ninja bandits from attack a village you have compelete freedom with your characters and there's seven playable characters in the journey mode and in the fight mode they'll be 25 in total.
there's alot improvements in this game like the fight mode and online mode you can fight three vs three, two vs two or one vs one going against other teams two vs two on line can be done as two vs two can be two separate players that the new online game.
also you can play the charcater either japanese or english what ever suites you the tree mode you its a first person mode like you dont see Naruto jumping from tree to tree its kinda hard to explain but you'll know yourself when you get the chance to play it also your team members will jump from tree to tree in the tree mode also they can do different things like desarm traps but you can switch charcaters when jumping from tree to tree.
some of the mission you cant switch characters so basically the mission revolves around the one character. when i was watching the video clip of Naruto Neji and Shikamaru their walking through the forest and Naruto stops and icon appears on Naruto head that he can sense danger but he dosent know what it is so you switch to Neji and he uses his Byakugan can see all the invisable traps which is really awsome! and you take control of Neji and take lead your team through a safe path.
in the first game you can explore the hidden leaf village the fight mode when fighting agaisnt the enemy you can do a tag team in the video i watched Naruto fights one of the bandits use his speacil moves then switch to either Neji or Shikamaru. also what i thought was really cool was when Naruto Neji and Shikamaru come to a river theres no bridge so you use Nartou clone justu to make a naruto bridge then switch to shikamaru he use his shadow possession justu and he streches his shadow towards a hole to active a switch to open the door. so the jonuery mode is about team work.
i watched a video interview on YOUTUBE it was an interview with the developer Masao Kobyashi and he was talking about the new features in the of Naruto broken bonds
he said you'll be able to explore more areas there's going to be larger side misson compared to the naruto rise of a ninja also the game will have day and night so you can do mission durning the day or night also the weather will change you'll have sunny days and cloudy days you'll be able to enter some buildings .
also the characters will be able to move their mouths when talking including facealy animation to express the emotion.
also for the first time Sasuke will have his own story mode it will be all about him and his background.
so there making Naruto broken bonds run along the lines like the Tv show so this game has big changes from Naruto rise of the Ninja.
well its going to be a competition between Naruto broken bonds vs Naruto ulimate Ninja storm which game will be number one? its really up to the naruto fans like myself and all the Naruto fans from the USA and the UK will be buying both games when they hit the shops in november.
so i've pre-order both games so i'll be looking forward to november in fact i've not completed Naruto rise of the Ninja yet so i better complete the game before i get Naruto broken bonds.
so look up YOUTUBE and type in Naruto broken bonds and watch the videos.
