Amazon.co.uk Review
The first lady of gaming returns in Tomb Raider - Underworld with her deepest and darkest adventure yet. Ostensibly searching for the mythical hammer of the Norse god Thor, the real draw of the game is exploring the underworlds of multiple different cultures.
A pair of panthers make an uncomfortable safety net
When you're a tomb raider, exploring ancient tombs is all in a day’s work
Lara’s pistols are no match for the kraken
The Mediterranean level includes a huge area for swimming

The basics of the game are classic Tomb Raider, as you explore the trap-filled interiors of ancient ruins using Lara’s famed acrobatic skills (and dual action pistols). From an underwater temple guarded by a giant octopus-like kraken to ancient Mayan structures in the South American jungle, she makes Indiana Jones look even older.

All of the levels are much larger than in previous games and far more interactive. You'll leave footprints in the sand and find all the scenery fully destructable. Every puzzle has multiple solutions, and the hand-to-hand combat system has been completely revamped. A new 3D map system also helps to ensure you never get lost so that you can concentrate on saving the world.

Key Features
  • Dream vacation: Travel the world in search of ancient artefacts, from the steaming-hot jungles of Mexico to the frozen Arctic, from the coast of Thailand to the depths of the Mediterranean Sea.
  • Think like Lara: An interactive, non-linear game world means anything that it looks like you should be able to pick up and use (or destroy) you can.
  • Bettering Bond: An all new grappling hook, sonar map, scuba gear, a range of new weapons, and Lara’s trusty motorbike make her the best equipped adventurer in gaming.
  • Help on demand: Receive as much or as little help as you want, from gentle nudges in the right direction to a full explanation of what you need to do next.
  • Behind the scenes: All of Lara’s animations in the game have been fully motion captured from Olympic gymnast Heidi Moneymaker. Her voice is that of Spooks actress Keeley Hawes.

3 out of 5 stars 3 Star game could be 4.5   January 5, 2009
This could easily have been a much better game it freezes and glitches a lot like on the level where you get the bike I was exploring and fell in several holes and dying then coming back with the bike to my side then one time NO BIKE which made the level almost impossible to complete, but if you have played and enjoyed the previous offerings you will like this I am still going to complete the game just all the glitches have knocked the shine off it.

2 out of 5 stars so wanted to be a tomb raider fan   January 4, 2009

ok first know that i never write reviews but after playing TR Underworld i feel the uttermost need to express my view and hope to god who ever made this game reads this!
First the only credit (2 stars) i can give is for the graphics and scenery which are impressive......but the controls are awkward the way she moves and interacts in the game are beyond a joke i.e breaking jugs takes about ten kicks if she finds them.....picking up stuff, if she isn't in a the rite spot where ever "that is" she simply does the hokey pokey an turns around several times. There's situations were the motorbike or her self looks like they have been paused on a bad VHS recorder.....i.e leg flashing and disappearing in a blinking fashion........i could say lots more but i can see from other reviewers here my pain is shared. I never liked Tomb raider years ago because of the controls and movement in game.....buying this new one i thought yes we are finally here were they will be great!
I was so wrong, i will be trading in TR underworld.......how can they have got it so wrong when Encharted: Drake's Fortune got it so right.

do not buy this game..............if your really desperate to have ago rent it for a night and treat yourself to a new pair of jeans instead.

P.S the Camera angles are more than annoying i.e taking all enjoyment out of game......if theres a petition out there to sign for the sacking of the guy who released this game please send me the link lol

4 out of 5 stars Tomb Raider Underworld   January 3, 2009
BRILLIANT game. Clever and addictive. Very addictive. Lara is easy to control and makes you feel confident. Minor glitches in the game programming. Minor issues with camera angles, issues with responsiveness of the controls at certain parts of the game. Some controls are a little bit wierd, i.e. if using for the first time, remember: 1) R1 is granades! 2) (up) on control pad is 'medipack'! 3) When you use motor cycle, the controls switch round: L1 = Left Pistol, R1 = Right Pistol.

The game story is a little bit short, I want more more more. I found most of the secrets and got most relics first time round, so now that the 'treasure hunt' option has appeared, I still feel cheated on the length of the adventure. I started it on 25 December 08, and playing on it intensively during christmas period, I finished the main story on 01 January 08.

I could write LOADS about this game, because I loved it so much - I felt good controlling Lara through the obstacles, and the puzzles filled up your confidence, and the scenes resembled the true greatness of the first released Tomb Raider (in '95/'96, was it?).

Crystal Dynamics: Do not change anything, just make it longer! And make sure the story line follows next time, coz anniversary does not entirely follow underworld when she left legend! (fundamental note that legend and before, she was killing ppl in the games, anniversary highlighted her first killing of a person, and then underworld seemed to continue the anniversary story?)

Damn, I tried to make this a short review!!! I LOVE THIS GAME!! x

3 out of 5 stars Beware!!!!!!!!!! A Glitch   January 2, 2009
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

I loved this game and I was going to give it 5 stars until I came across a glitch that makes it impossible to continue through the game.

On the 3rd Mexican Level, The Midgard Serpent, if you manually save the game at any point up to now, the first ramp you come to will be down instead of up, and thus making it impossible to continue.

The only way to continue after this happens is to delete your data and start the game from the beginning.

To my cost, I had to start my data again after collecting every piece of treasure in the game up to this point.

Please, don't make the same mistake I did and manually save the game, let the autosave do the work.

4 out of 5 stars Better than Legend - But not the best Tomb raider games in the series   January 2, 2009
I think this was better than crystal dynamics 1st game tomb raider legend, i thought the puzzles and levels and environments were much better this time a round with amazing graphics.
However on some occasions the combat gets clymsy as sometimes when i press triangle she misses her target (a still clay pot lol), but i thought the slow-mo adrenaline rush was good when she jumps in slow motion and you must aim the red cross hairs in the circle and get a head shot.
this is arguably crystal dynamics best original tomb raider yet,
But i still think Tomb raider anniversary (a remake of the original) will be the best tomb raider yet,
But this is still a very good adventure and a must own if you're into adventrue and action games like me!
