Amazon.co.uk Review

For over a decade now fans have been wondering just what a team-up between Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog would be like. Everything from traditional platform games to complex role-playing titles have been suggested, but it's fair to say nobody imagined that it would finally happen in the form of an athletics simulator. It's officially licensed from the 2008 Beijing Olympics though (Sega already had the license for their own more traditional tie-in) and contains all the usual events you'd expect including the 100m sprint, swimming, judo, table tennis, hammer throwing and archery. Sega have even been talking about using the new Wii Zapper controller for a spot of clay pigeon shooting.

More than twenty-five characters from both universes will be playable in the game, including not just Mario and Sonic but also Luigi, Tails, Yoshi, Knuckles, Bowser, Doctor Eggman, Princess Peach and Amy. Other characters will have cameos as judges such as Cream the Cat and Toad. You'd expect some characters to be naturally better at some sports than others but each has their own strengths and weakness, with even Sonic's incredible speed mitigated by his slow acceleration. The whole game is developed by Sega but overseen by legendary Nintendo creator Shigeru Miyamoto, with full tournament and missions modes as well as online leaderboards for all the different events. The name may sound like an April Fool's joke at first but this crossover could well be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

4 out of 5 stars Fab!   January 2, 2009
I got this game today and so far its pretty good. The game can get a bit fustrating, but all games can after a while. I do recommend you try it out and it is worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars an AWSOME present   December 30, 2008

i got this first as a christmas present, i had not asked for it but boy am i glad i got it!
Some games are good to just get you some points, there are also multi player games and missions.
Some of the harder games really make you want to pass them so you play over and over again until you win which gives you a great sense of acheivments, and once you have won something it definately does not mean that you will win every time.
Some of the games are short so it is good if you want a quick game before doing something else, or you can play some of the longer games for a longer play period.
The unlockable games are really fun and i must say that my favourites are fencing, trampolining and table tennis although the rowing, running and swimming are also very fun, they make you tired by the end though!
I first thought that the more you played as a character the better that character would get overall, i have not quite worked out if this is true or not, call me an idiot if its obvious! Because of this, yoshi has always been my favourite so i played all the games with him over and over! There is a good rasnge of characters and it is overall an awsome game! Im so glad that someone bought if for me. :D :D

My dad also loved it and the controls are easy (although the archery took a long while to get the hang of!) even my grandparents had a go! This game is perfect for ages 8 to 80! BUY IT :)

1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing   December 27, 2008
I wish I had listened to the prevous review which stated that the game is only about moving your hands in different ways which makes the game become boring very quickly. Within two or three days we were bored and went back to WII sports which is better by far. This game is one dimensional and you spend a lot of time reading the controls rather than just playing the game.

4 out of 5 stars Great fun for the whole family!   December 23, 2008

One of the lovely things about the Nintendo Wii is that its innovative controls and family friendly catalogue of games have helped to lift gaming out of the niche group of predominantly young men and made it more accessible to non-gamers.

Sonic and Mario At The Olympic games is a prime example of a title that can appeal to all from the very young to the very old, from novices to veteran gamers.

A wide range of olympic events are available in the game and they all have intuitive, easy to pick up controls that won't alienate those unaccustomed to the machine. Better yet, the more you play, the more extra events and modes become unlocked to allow a great deal of replay value.

A wide range of characters from the titular heroes' respective universes are available for your gaming pleasure, though your Mii characters can be used just as easily in most game modes.

With the festive period looming ever closer this may be a far more interactive and enjoyable alternative to Trivial Pursuit!

5 out of 5 stars Just brilliant!   December 4, 2008
Just brilliant. Another amazing game with the lovely Mario (plus Sonic and characters from both games!)

As with all the Mario games, this game is packed with millions of mini games and levels to unlock. Everytime you play it you want to beat the previous score which means you never put it down!! This game has entertained me for hours, swimming, long jump, throwing the javelin...

I cant really critisize this game at all!!

An absolute must!! Perfect for younger children right through to the 'mature' adult !! Well worth the money!!
