Editorial Reviews:

Call of Duty returns, and to many people’s surprise, it’s going back to World War II. While original series creators Infinity Ward brought the series into the modern day, developer Treyarch are setting out to make the definitive historical first-person shooter.
The Soviet attack on Berlin features intense street battles
Take on the Japanese navy as you board a U.S. flying boat
World at War features the most realistic fire effects ever
The new ability to swim adds to both the story and multiplayer modes

The game is primarily set in the Pacific theatre and has a much more realistic, violent tone requiring less-linear game play than previous Call of Duty installments. You'll struggle to survive Japanese attacks without mastering new gaming skills, like swimming or how to use a flamethrower--a weapon that packs some punch in the fully destructable game world.

Also featured is a campaign on the Eastern front, where you take control of a soldier in the Soviet Red Army during the attack on Berlin in the closing stages of the war. The game also includes the series’ first co-op mode, while the competitive multiplayer mode aims to build upon the achievements of Call of Duty 4 and add to the game’s longevity.

Key Features
  • Dual campaigns: Fight in two very different World War II battles. Take on the Japanese Imperial army in the Pacific, and liberate Berlin as part of the Soviet Red Army.
  • Grim realities: Experience the most bloody and realistic combat ever seen in the series, as you witness enemy atrocities and wield horrific new weapons such as the flamethrower.
  • Job with benefits: Revamped competitive multiplayer mode features useable vehicles and an expanded perks system from Call of Duty 4.
  • Brothers in arms: For the first time, a Call of Duty game features a four-player co-operative mode that’s playable online or via a split screen option on the same console.
  • Modern graphics: The game uses an enhanced version of the Call of Duty 4 graphics engine, with wood that splinters realistically when shot and fires that spread organically.
About the Developer: Treyarch
One of publisher Activision’s biggest internal studios, Treyarch have worked on many of the company’s best known titles, from the Spider-Man movie tie-ins and spin-offs to several of the Call of Duty sequels and the new James Bond game, Quantum of Solace.

2 out of 5 stars Amazon's review does not refer to the PS2 version   January 3, 2009

If you are seriously thinking of buying this, I strongly suggest you look elsewhere on the Internet to find out exactly how limited this game is on the PS2 - it is not an equivalent of the PS3, but instead is a heavily cut-down version. There was very little here that genuinely impressed me - perhaps you'll think different. For me, the best bit is not the gameplay or graphics but the movies that run between missions.

Shame.

Though a reasonably enjoyable game, nothing is that new, yes theres a flame thrower but thats been done before on a ps2 FPS (was it Castle Wolfenstein?). This game does have some big problems. It seems to have been rushed onto the shelves and has all the classic problems that plague poor FPS'.
The AI is poor. Members of your squad constantly stand in front of you (usually just as your about to squeeze off a shot to take out that annoying sniper!)or trap you into a corner. The enemy AI is also poor, one will run from a doorway and take cover behind a wall, you shoot him and another will run from same doorway and take cover in exactly the same position so you shoot him and wait for the next.

I had to restart one level twice because for some reason it wasn't recognising that I was at the objective, one where you have to regroup on your commander which then opens a door to the next section, no matter how close or from which direction I approched him nothing happened.

Also, I've twice got stuck in the terrain, no matter how much I've jumped, crawled and struggled to get free I've ended up having to blow myself up with a grenade to get out.
These are all things I'd expect from either very old or budget games but think its totally unacceptable for a game from a top maker in 2008!

Having said all that it does have some very enjoyable levels and I will replay it. All in all if your a COD or FPS fanatic you'll proberly be able to turn a blind eye to the flaws and enjoy the game , otherwise I'd save your money for a game thats actually been tested properly.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent non-stop action   November 15, 2008

Finally it arrives, after a long wait. The first think I thought about when I got this game today is why didn't we have the previous edition on PS2?
Anyways, the game is excellent, it is set in WWII, so it will be a very familiar territory for who ever had the chance to play titles like Medal of Honor, Sniper Elite (environmentally speaking, not game-play), and the previous Call of Duty Titles. Graphically speaking, it looks so good, nothing jaw-dropping though, and it shows how the PS2 is becoming old nowadays. You can hardly notice any difference from other FPS titles in this sense. However, the best thing is gameplay, wow, you start very very easy, in a small tutorial, showing you how to control, move, throw grenades, etc, then hell opens, and it is non-stop action. There is not point where you do not get showered from the enemy, especially with difficulty setting set to high. The flamethrower is fabulous, you can do massive damage with it, and it looks great. The audio is superb as well, it is like actually being there, though sometimes the speech did seem vague, and not as loud as it should be cause of the background noise. Ok, it is a war scene supposedly, but it is still a game, and sometimes you need to pay attention to what others are saying to you. The physics and the way things work around you add a lot to this game, for instance with your flamethrower, you can cause a barrel to explode sending all enemies hiding behind it to the air. It does seem that the missions are a bit short, in a sense that you always want more, i would not mind if this game takes me a year to finish. Weapons seem a lot more realistic as well, and it is not as easy as in some FPS games to just point, shoot, and it is done. Here, the enemy AI is quite clever, they keep running, and jumping off bridges and walls, etc. So you gotta work hard to sort things out.
Get it now, no need to wait at all, it is worth every penny, you are gonna enjoy it so much. Definitely better than the latest MOH and it sums up every CoD title so far. Superb stuff, and I really hope they keep making it for the PS2.
