Manufacturer's Description Step onto the pitch and play professional football your way in FIFA 09. Experience the most authentic football simulation EA Sports has delivered as you live the fantasy of playing as a professional player and customise the game to suit your style and ability. Powered by the third generation of the EA Sports football engine, FIFA 09 features more than 250 core gameplay additions and enhancements that deliver the most responsive, intelligent and realistic action ever for the series. Enjoy turning defenders with more controlled dribbling and ball control, snapping off precision shots with improved first-time shooting mechanics and firing beautifully timed passes with greater accuracy, placing the ball exactly where you want it. With new player momentum physics the speed and weight of the player determines everything from the distance of a slide tackle and the power of a header to the severity of player collisions and the height of a player's jump. Plus, players now behave according to their physical attributes with larger, stronger players dominating collisions, battles for control of the ball, and position in challenges for two player headers.

Fantastic return to form from EA January 7, 2009 These day's, the odd yet enticing world of the Internet is ever more important to get full value of our games or consoles. Thankfully, such formulae as sports games will never die on that front, for we can just pick up and play without needing to blast up an American and save the world with your (certainly not mine) headset. Being a Pro Evo player some years ago before I gave up modern consoles, I was fed up with the repetitive nature of releases, but coming back to the world of FIFA has been a great experience.
Fluidity and more composed movement is definitely the main theme EA have been working on to catch up with Pro Evo. Gone are the day's of FIFA 2005/06/07 where each release was basically the same, except with a fancy name for a new way of pressing a few buttons. This 'feels' better. Moving players isn't stiff anymore. Computer controlled teams don't all move like robots and guard the goal like roman emperors. They have a life of their own! Even if a little wacky at times.
Player animation is beautiful - the player and ball are now 2 seperate objects that can collide in any way possible - not just a series of animations. Take one excellent example; you're the keeper holding the ball. Press triangle to drop it, and it just drops and bounces. Press circle to kick, and that's what the goalie just does. Kicks. And because of this separate process, gameplay is much funner because you can make some right howlers - press the kick button at the wrong time, and your goal-keeper will just completely miss the ball! It's fantastic, theirs nothing pre-planned about it.
The commentary was always something that I'd laugh at during football-sims; particularly John Motson having more orgasms over balls being hit wide rather than spectacular free-kicks. However, our Sky Sports duo have done a fantastic job here and it's a pleasure to here them talking rather relaxed, with nice relations to players/tactics/movement. Their is also a FREE commentary pack you can download from your Playstation Store link on the Main Menu, go check it out.
Graphics wise, I need not tell you what to expect - this thing looks stunning. The only thing I would say is that the Xbox 360 version does sport (excuse the pun) better coloring and detailing. But this is to be expected - the 360 has a far better graphics GPU than the Playstation 3, so theirs no point in complaining. The PS3 only has a better CPU, which accounts for performance; not looks.
However, EA games are rarely perfect, and FIFA 09 does have a handful of issues that prevent it from being perfect in my eyes.
Firstly, performance - It may well be that this stretches onto the Xbox 360 and PC versions of the game, but the frame-rate at times is poor. During standard game-play their isn't usually a problem, the game plays very smoothly, but the most consistent slow downs are during cut-scene intermissions, where the players act (and look) like baboons as usual, whether it be for a foul or injury etc. From a high performance console, you'd expect smooth animation, but rarely is their any smoothness about it. The movement's are drab in comparison to open-play, out of intermissions, which takes alot of the authentic character away.
The AI at times can be quite eccentric too. One perfect example that happens to me every game is that if the opposition has the ball on the attack in your half the field, and you let them run down the flank. Instead of cutting inside, while you stand still and let them waltz through, the AI player runs in a straight down line the flank, right up to the corner flank, makes a meal of keeping it in play, then runs back in field to pass. Hardly a convincing moment during gameplay, but as I always say, if it makes me laugh then I don't care, as then it becomes entertainment which is what gaming is all about. Unless you believe it is what you were destined to do in life...
Another problem can be noted on the 'Broadcast' camera angle that you may choose from the options Menu at any time. Although it's always been my favorite angle, on this years port it's been zoomed quite far out (with no option to go back in) but the major problem is that it prevents you from seeing what's happening at the lower Left and Right corner flags, because the camera won't move down. This means you don't know whether the ball is in play or not.
Other small problems are there too; a quite dopey one, technically speaking (I wouldn't advise using that in the Office to the boss...) is that the Replay's sometimes show parts of the games from different angles. Great! But how is it possible to show a goal/chance from the opposite side of the stadium to where the camera's ARE? Just pick any large Stadium such as Wembley or Old Trafford, and you'll note only one stand has cameras - not both.
This is nit-picking though. I wouldn't have normally said that had I bought this game at it's full RRP when it came out, but considering I got it brand new for under twenty quid, I don't at all feel robbed of my money. It's been amazing value, which is incredibly surprising given it's so cheap early on it's shelve life. At it's current price, I'll allow those problematic issues to pass - this is fantastic value for money!
Brilliance on a disc! December 30, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
FIFA09 in my humblest of opinion is by far and away the greatest football simulation released to date.
I play this online and literally shout at the screen as I would when my beloved NUFC play, it brings out my competitive nature more than any other game. Seeing as it is one on one in the online mode that I play, it is simply you against somebody else online and games can be fierce!
You can be at a stalemate up to the 80th minute and then smash a goal home or have one blitzed past your own keeper. Emotions can certainly run high and I rarely shout at my TV on any other game than this. Never has the game been captured so well as to how FIFA have managed to do here. I was all for PES until moving over last year and FIFA is heads and shoulders above PES at this moment in time.
For the few little imperfections in this game which there are a few, the enjoyment factor is that high that I rarely notice anything other than where my striker is positioned and whether or not I should lob the keeper or try for a toe poke!
If you love football and gaming, this game is a MUST!
Pretty but, Very Disapponiting Gameplay. December 29, 2008 I was surprised to see this game on sale in mid December for a as little as 20 as this only been in the shops for a few months. After buying this and playing it on my PS3 I quickly found out why. There is no doubting that there is some nice touches. I like the way you can have a practice while the console loads the next match and Graphics are crisp. The BIG problem is that the gameplay is awful. Playing against the computer is very frustrating. Keeping possession is very difficult indeed and tackling your opposition is equally tough. When you have possession get any where near your opposition you will be quickly dispossesed and when your looking to play a ball in the last third you may as well not bother. When they have possession it almost impossible to win the ball back. You can literally have your player stand right next the bloke who has the ball and franctically bash your tackle button and nothing happen's which is a joke when consider how easy for them it is to dispossess you! The other thing that they have got totally wrong is when your the defending team the player you end up controlling is often 20yards away so you end up having to constantly to switch to a player who's nearer to the ball which can take up crucial time, by which time they have a goal scoring chance. I also found the menu's are very poorly structured and when you want to set up a match, the game automatically tries to connect you online before giving the choice to play V's the computer but, when you consider the above I guess that that is no surprise. Perhaps EA know that its rubbish too.
Back to the drawing board with this one. They should have people play test their games more before they release them.
Signs of improvement from EA December 28, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have to say that initially I thought that the game-play was a little bit slow compared to what I have experienced with PES, however after setting the speed to `fast' this allows for thoughtful and intuitive game-play.
The graphics are excellent as you would expect and it's always nice to be able to play with real players in real teams in real leagues (no more England League for me). As well as this there is a quality feel of professionalism in this game that has always been lacking from PES.
On the downside the fun-factor is missing a little, something which EA and Konami seem to be neglecting in recent years.
After having played both FIFA09 and PES09 I would recommend FIFA09 this year.
You better have the patience of a saint! December 14, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I last played Fifa in 2001 on a ps2 and loved it (and was pretty good at it too I might add). Blimey how its changed. Look, don't get me wrong, super graphics and a zillion options but try getting stuck in to a simple game and you'll get walked all over. The practice area consists of just you and a keeper, thats it...mmm not really helping with the passing or tackling skills. - Yes I can now juggle the ball with both feet but thats a fat lot of use during the game (the A.I. opposition defence is made up of anphetamine drinking mind readers). IF it had a PROPER tutorial area I would have loved this game. I just need some decent guidance - EA sports online dont offer much - thats for sure. IF you've played Fifa in recent years or youre a hardened FIFA head you may have become accustomed to it, in which case you may be ok. IF youre new to it - you better have the patience of a saint or a personal tutor. Its stressful rather than exciting. Some will say Im saying this because Im crap at it. Theyre absolutely right, but I am not alone - and if they want to sell more copies they'd better get some decent training on board. Otherwise it looks brilliant.
